Longranger, it is strange that Brigadier Kamal Gunaratne was given the GOC 53. I thought he was doing a good job as the GOC 55. But I guess we can all agree that 55 is in good hands under Brigadier Prasanna Silva.
New rumors have surface that both side are preparing to launch a massive attacks on each on the National front. I strongly believe the time is not right for SLA to launch another massive attack. I notice that the past few weeks SLAF have been pounding LTTE position in Muhamalai sector. LTTE artillery and mortars are intact and their still have devastating capability to zero in volumes of arty/mortars on the advancing troops. Isn't it wise SLA to use the same method to advancing LTTE cadres? Hope JOC takes measures to neutralize these threats.
53 is the premier offensive division of the army with many facets of warfare within its structure. Hence I believe HQ thought a more experienced officer was more suited for the GOC role than an officer who has had no prior experience of a GOC role of an entire division.

On the SLA's side it is no big secret that SLA have not ceased its ambitions to forge ahead of MUHAMALE. On the Tamil Tigers' part it is indeed a surprise. With their overstretched defences and lack of trained cadre it is very unlikely that they will make a second attempt on Jaffna. I believe the current 'hype' of a Tamil Tiger buildup is aimed at probing SLA's counter measures during such an eventuality.

During the full brunt of the Tamil Tiger assault in 2006 the divisions made a tactical withdrawal from their FDLs before fighting back. This was done in such a manner to draw the Tamil Tiger waves towards more open land North of ELUTHMADUWAL. The results again were catatrophic for the offender.
[I am just curious to know if LTTE still pose thambimuttus. Do you have any ideas ? Has any one assessed the threat of hitting civilian air?]
Once the THOPPIGALA campaign was over through interrogation of a captured cadre the assessment was the Tamil Tigers were in possession of 3 SA-14 GREMLIN one of which was fired unsuccessfully at a MI17 and one found buried. The third however is still at large is believed to have been smuggled into Wanni. Then again like the one found buried I do not know if the smuggled weapon is in good working order or not.
Given that how much of propaganda mileage the Tamil Tigers are seeking by attacking small outposts of the SLN/SLA (yesterday's Mannar outpost attack), if they did have sufficient stocks of SAMs, they would have already used it to shore up their sagging morale. However the success of such an attempt needs to be questioned in light of superior counter measures present in each SLAF aircraft.
Please read my brief on SAMs which has clearly included which are the most likely weapons systems the Tamil Tigers possess if they did and why it is hard to get hold of advanced SAM systems.
I have read about counter measures available on our new fighter air crafts. I think they are technically capable of defending them selves. However I feel our leaders who go on foreign trips 3 times a month are not that safe while on air.

He won it by making the other poor dumb bastard die for his country.

This is just a small 'prelude' before my next brief.

Looking forward to your next update.

Waiting for "the Next brief"...
:)
Prabhakaran said he's waiting for the right time to hit back hard on the army. Particulary waiting for a big jayasikurui type advance
All the conscripts are currently being "battle trained".
Hopefully SLA can mount another devastating strike on some senior figure or base.
Thank you for replying :-)
